Ostara/Spring Equinox in Tasmania 2026
The Sabbat of Ostara/Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere is traditionally celebrated on or around September 20 - 23 and in the Northern Hemisphere, March 19 - 22 This year 2026 its exact date is September 23rd at 10:06am.
Ostara is associated with childhood and new life, the Goddess and God are perceived as children, personifying youth and innocence before their entry into adulthood. The Goddess, as the Maiden, covers the earth with flowers and love while the God grows to maturity.
The Equinoxes are the season’s balancing points, when the day and night are of equal length and you have opportunity to invite balance in your life. Inspiration for celebrating or practicing rituals around fertility, new beginnings, and rebirth can be found in the natural world around you. The energy of spring is the do, create and bring in the new!
The earth is coming to life. New growth can be seen on hedges, trees and spring bulbs are sprouting and in flower. Spring blossom brings a flush of excited energy that warmer weather is on its way. Birds have already been busy building their nests and a welcoming their young. The plovers as showing their newly hatched young around their patch 😉 Snakes are waking up.
This time of year, calls to me in so many ways. The curtains are pushed back as far as they can go, blinds drawn towards the ceilings to let in vast quantities of light that inevitably reveal window tracks in need cleaning that I have chosen to ignore over the winter. If the thought of cleaning windows causes a heaviness in the pit of your stomach, think about what windows represent spiritually.
They are your psychic vision and if they are dirty and clouded, your third eye is clouded and your perception of what you ‘see’ needs cleaning to receive ‘clear sight’. It is with this thought in mind that nudges me to regularly clean my windows 😉
Now that I am on the subject of cleaning, spring cleaning is a ritual that tends to cleanse your mind, body and soul as well as the home. Not to sound too intense, spring cleaning tends to go all year round in my home. Clutter and I are do not live well together. I ‘feel’ off center when cupboards or other areas get messy. And I am ruthless when it comes to off-loading!
Getting into the deepest, darkest corners of the pantry, linen press, bathroom cabinets and the cough cough paper and craft areas feels like I have cleansed masses of stagnant energy. Apart from feeling more clear headed, space appears like magic 😉
Cleaning is literally observing energetic hygiene, and if you are thinking ahead for your own rituals of clearing out the energies of 2026, you can lighten the load by starting with bits and pieces now. The ritual of clearing out the energies to bring in new, fresh energy is one I take quite seriously. This morning I have taken advantage of the day – being that it isn’t overcast to energetically clear my home. I love to let in as much light as possible while doing this spiritual practice 😉
In the weeks leading up to the equinox I have been concentrating on self-healing/self-release spiritual practices. Dreams have been providing direction, for which I am grateful for.
I am meeting what needs to be released head on and working with valuable spiritual practices such as the Ho’o ponopono, energetically clearing my home regularly, meditation and working with crystals as concerns arise. My awareness of observing when something of low vibration enters, I am immediately following it with a positive countermeasure. A beautiful result from this is that my creativity is on fire! And life is flowing nicely 😊
The late rain over winter has kept the grass green and growing and spring planting is already underway at home. I have put in a watering system of sorts - terracotta pots in the earth and their plates used to cover the pots. By filling the pots, the water leeches out to where the plants need them the most - the root system. I have of course blocked the holes and have water for the bees from the plates on top! I am watching the weather to plant lettuce, as well as snow peas, red beet, leeks, baby green and yellow beans. I am adding more herbs for healing teas and creating smoking sticks. One of my favourite flavours for water kefir is lavender and mint.
Seeing the silver birches come to life brings renewed energy – I love the silver birch grove! It whispers promises of new ceremonial magic that will filter in from Spirit. My inner child is overjoyed seeing new born lambs and I haven’t quite lost my childhood thoughts of reaching over a fence and taking one home – I won’t, but I’d like to 😉
The Luma apiculate hedge has come back nicely and the temporary screen fence will soon come down
😉
Spring encourages change and adventure. Mentally you feel ready to expand your mind, move mountains, seek new environments or new social circles. Entering the eastern door of the wheel of spiritual learning, you feel the warmth of the dawn on your back to urge you forever forward.
Change at this time of year doesn’t seem to be as scary – it is almost a rite of passage. Ostara’s egg cracks open giving way to embracing your creative potential, manifesting your dreams you have been sitting on since the Winter Solstice. Spring and the Equinox brings rebirth and opportunity to start again.
You feel you can step out into the world courageously, be someone different or perhaps be who you have always been but never given the lead in your life. You are a seed of pure potential and Spring offers the fertile ground/energy for you to flourish and grow.
The Equinox is a powerfully energetic time to birth new ideas, and begin creative or health related pursuits. Following your heart in regards to new love, study, or location enables you to harness the energies to bring your dreams to fruition. Explore this beautiful state with its hidden jewels and its pockets of untouched landscapes. Track the ley lines and high energy places. It is never so alive as now. Let the land heal and renew you.
Observing or celebrating the Spring Equinox can look like:
Connect with nature. For family friendly ideas have a nature scavenger hunt. List items you would find that have fallen naturally to discourage pulling leaves or flowers from the trees. Go on forest, beach or mountain walks. Picnic under the stars or bring in the sunrise.
Create sacred space in your garden with areas dedicated to relaxing as well as growing food and herbs. You can even count growing micro herbs and sprouting seeds if it’s all you have time or space for. Take part in a tree planting community event.
Spring clean. Try one room at a time. Clean out the gutters and drains. It’s a great time to service your mowers, sharpen garden tools or service the car.
Decorating eggs and having egg hunts. Create using what you find in nature. Try making mandalas from pebbles, leaves, flowers, shells, pinecones. You can make small arrangements in your home or large ones in your garden, beach or open spaces. I love seeing rock stacks and driftwood teepees on the beaches where I live. During one of my workshops earlier this year, as a group, created a nature mandala. It was a beautiful experience as well as our finished creation!
Create an altar dedicated to the Goddess Ostara. Use pinks, blue, white, yellow and greens to decorate. Add rabbit images or figurines to represent fertility and renewed energy. Fresh spring flowers, lavender, rose or violet oils to anoint candles as well as focus on new intentions to harness the energy!
Have a shared meal with friends, join a walking or social group. Try something new! Go on an adventure! Begin new study or visit an area, island or country that you have dreamed of!
